Biography
James Powell is a Senior Vice President at Van Liew Trust Company, where he works as both a trust officer, portfolio manager and research analyst. He partners with individuals, families, and institutions to develop investment strategies aligned with their long–term goals, values, and risk profiles. James is responsible for research related to fixed income, alternative investments and third–party managers.
Experience & Background
Prior to joining Van Liew Trust in 2018, James spent nearly a decade with Fidelity Investments and worked at Ironwood Investment Management and Deloitte & Touche LLP in New York. Earlier in his career, he served as an infantry officer in the United States Army for nine years, bringing discipline and leadership to his work in financial services.
Investment Approach
James focuses on building long-term relationships with clients and delivering thoughtful, personalized investment solutions. He is particularly interested in how capital markets, human behavior, and economic trends intersect using that perspective to guide asset allocation, security analysis and portfolio construction decisions.

Professional & Community Involvement
James is an active member of the CFA® Society Providence and the Financial Planning Association. He currently serves as a trustee at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington and has previously held officer positions with St. Michael’s Country Day School in Newport and St. Columba’s Berkeley Memorial Chapel in Middletown.
Outside the Office
James enjoys sailing, hiking, camping, golf, skiing, and spending time with his wife and three adult children.
